Kuningan marks the last day of the Galungan celebration in Bali, which is ten days long. Its a celebration to honour their visiting ancestors and and the living are to entertain them with offerings for ten days. I had the opportunity to join in the celebration at the temples on the last day, Kuningan, which marks the return of their ancestors to heaven. Equipped with a camera and sporting the traditional outfit (other wise you are never getting into the prayer chambers), I have to admit its was an interesting array of sight and sound.
Gunung Kawi is located in the hills off Tampaksiring, surrounded by jungle and stunning views of rice terraces. To visit the ten rock hewn 'Candi's' one would have to walk down and deep into the valley. The sound of running water from the river that flows through the complex followed by the lush greenery, its sure to make you feel like you're one of the lucky few who have stumbled upon its secret. |
