Pura Luhur, UluwatuPura Luhur, the temple by the cliff. This temple is said to be one of nine key directional temples in Bali. The temple perches 70m above the Indian Ocean. As we entered the temple I headed straight down the stone path with overgrowth. It felt magical as all you see is lush green and right at the end, it opens up to the clear blur sky and the horizon. Its just perfect.
The view here is spectacular.

Pura Tirta Empul, TampaksiringThe temple of the Holy spring water. Finally I’m getting to have a spiritual cleanse in these waters after missing out on my last two trips to Bali. Devotees bath in these pool moving progressively from left to right except for the last two watering spouts as it's specially for the deceased to ensure that their passing into the afterlife is smooth and without any interruption. Spare change: Check. Swim wear: Check. Offerings: Chee…no, not checked. I have none. Looks like I have to purchase some on the way or at the temple. It’s customary that everyone who wishes to ‘bath’ in these pools to bring an offering for the gods. You would need 2 sets minimum, one for the alter right in front of the first bathing pool, and the second when you are at the first watering spout (when you are in the pool of course). We paid our entrance fee, Rp. 15,000 per person, and I soon made my way to the changing area where a sarong and locker can be rented. It’s a custom to tie a sarong when you want to get into the pool. If not, you’re not getting in, that’s for sure. All is still silent... “BEEEEPPPP! BEEEEPPPP!”
For god’s sake… I actually am paying for this. It was 1:30am and I had to be up, get dressed and get down by 2am so that my pick could get my cousin and I to the base of Mount Batur for our sunrise climb. I said I was hanging up my climbing boots… never doing this again… not paying for torture. After Mt. Rinjani I swore to not climb any mountains. Yeah, well it didn’t last that long and I’m clearly eating my own words. “Planning to go to Bali, would you like to come?” That sealed the deal and I was back in Bali less than 3 months later with my dad and a cousin on a family vacation. Clearly this is a very comfortable holiday compared to my backpacking adventures and it was structured. Correction, it was VERY organised and we managed to do and see a lot in 6 days. If you haven’t already seen my previous post on Bali, this is just an extension of that but on the other end of the scale. Tanjong Benoa.
Café Batavia at Kota Tua. Jakarta, a city where the phrase 'horrendous traffic' takes on a whole new meaning. If you think Bangkok traffic is bad, wait till you get to Jakarta, its an absolute nightmare! Having said that, I had an amazing weekend. Who knew one could have such a brilliant time?
Jakarta is a city with over 20 million in population with a long history as a trading port since the 4th century. It is one place you should visit at least once in your lifetime. It's a melting pot of cultures, food as well as a good shock to your system. And I do mean a complete shock! Just like any other city, Jakarta has some really amazing cafés, bars and restaurants. Most of them are situated within malls so it's relatively convenient to have dinner, pre-drinks and then hit the clubs. Some of their clubs are also situated within the vicinity of malls, which makes it all the more convenient. |
